Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas October 13, 2007 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Mind Mapping: The purpose of this workshop is to develop the technique of making and using mind maps to analyze discourse, whether text, voiced or signed. Mind mapping discourse aids interpreters’ understanding of content, organization of information, identification of key points and connecting supportive details for recall, - in order to provide useful cohesive interpretations. Overall accuracy ratio of simultaneous interpretations to source messages can be raised by practicing with stagnant texts incorporating mind-mapping techniques. Participants will learn to watch, listen and note; 1) purpose, 2) topics, and 3) details of discourse, in order to communicate speakers’ intended meanings.

"Accentuate The Negative: Negation In ASL" (10/20)

This workshop will consist of systematic instruction of the signs and non-manual markers associated with negation in American Sign Language. There will be an intense focus on compounding signs in order to produce appropriate ASL interpretation of negative sentence types. While some instruction of single signs used by the Deaf for negation may occur, this workshop is not intended to teach vocabulary, but rather to teach the most effective ways to use vocabulary for interpreting negative sentence types.
There will also be a KAI-RID forum to ask what you want out of the annual conference this year.
**Participants must have an intermediate knowledge of ASL lexicon and syntax. The target audience in ITP/IPP Students; State Level 1, 2, or 3 Certified; EIPA level 3.00; ESSE Level 3.

About the Instructor: Amy Fowler began studying Signing Exact English at the age of eight. Her studies later broadened to include American Sign Language and Cued Speech. She became state certified in ASL and SEE interpreting and transliteration in 2000. Amy has worked as an interpreter and a transliterator in a variety of settings, including high school, college, and community settings. She now works as a community interpreter with Sign Language Interpreting Services, LLC.; a contract interpreter with Wichita State University, and as an adjunct instructor with the Interpreter Training Program at Cowley College.
