November At A
Glance
Girard, KS: "Multi-Meaning Words" (11/03)

Multi-Meaning Vocabulary: November 3, 2007 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Registration deadline: (10/22)
Workshop cost: $20.00

The purpose of this workshop will be to look at some common words
that have more than one meaning.  Interpreter choices in how we deal
with vocabulary when working from voice-to-sign and from sign-to-voice
can either skew or enhance the message equivalency of the
interpretation.  Participants will be provided opportunities to experiment
with options and brainstorm together for most effective means.

"Topical Organization" Ellis, Kansas (11/10)

Registration deadline is November 2nd

November 10th 9 am - 12 pm
Registration Fee: $20.00
Topical organization:  Every sentence has a topic.  Every paragraph has
a topic sentence.  Every utterance (signed, written or spoken), has a
structure that establishes an object to which attention is drawn,
prioritizes information, and connects descriptors and elaborations.
Topical organization in ASL is identified by utterance boundaries,
raising the eyebrows and tilting the head upwards.  This workshop will
present opportunities in songs and storytelling to identify topical
organizations and practice techniques for incorporating utterance
boundaries for clearer interpreted messages.

"Top-Down Processing - Lexical, Sentence,
Pragmatic" Ellis, KS (11/10)

Registration deadline is November 2nd

November 10th 1 pm to 4 pm
Registration Fee: $20.00
Top-Down Processing - Multiple Strategies to Simplify the Interpreting
Experience:  This workshop will present multiple well-known
processing models (what goes on inside our heads when we’re
working), authored by leaders in the interpreting profession, and give
examples for their application to interpreting in the classroom. During
this workshop, the presenter will show different interactive video
samples to identify the previously hidden stages within the process.
Participants will analyze how language, disposition, and surroundings
can immediately change the way we process source information and
relay the overall message to our students/consumers/clients. This is
truly the difference between signing and interpreting.
