Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Fingerspelling and Numbers in ASL -  DRILLS, AND ACTIVITIES:  Most
interpreters feel  their fingerspelling skills are weak or inadequate. This
workshop will focus on fingerspelling and how it is used within ASL
discourse so that participants will become more fluent, more confident,
and more comfortable, both receptively and expressively. A practice
DVD, by Elizabeth Mendoza (RID Press), will be used to promote a
deeper understanding of the metacognitive strategies necessary for
improvement.

Wichita, KS "Chunk Boundaries-Eliminate Run On
Sentences" (03/01)

Registration deadline is February 22nd

Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas
1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
The interpreter who is trying to keep up with a speaker often uses
speaker pauses to catch up, fearing that s/he will lose information if
s/he stops, resulting in run-on sentences and strings of words that
make little sense.  This workshop will provide strategies and practices
that will not only eliminate the run-on sentence, but can bind utterances
in meaningful ways, aiding in the short-term memory that helps him/her
keep up, enhancing clarity in communication.

Ellis, KS "Spatial Organization" (03/01)

Spatial Organization: March 1, 2008 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Registration deadline:  (02/22)
Workshop cost: $20.00

Proper and consistent use of space in interpretation not only makes
interpreting easier, but it also makes it easier to understand.  This
workshop will provide practice using sign space to set up objects and
concepts in relation to each other and to refer back to those as the
interpretation continues or to reset objects or concepts as needed.

Ellis, KS "Mind Mapping" (03/01)

Mind Mapping: March 1, 2008 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Registration deadline: (02/22)
Workshop cost: $20.00

The purpose of this workshop is to develop the technique of making
and using mind maps to analyze discourse, whether text, voiced or
signed.  Mind mapping discourse aids interpreters’ understanding of
content, organization of information, identification of key points and
connecting supportive details for recall, - in order to provide useful
cohesive interpretations.   Overall accuracy ratio of simultaneous
interpretations to source messages can be raised by practicing with
stagnant texts incorporating mind-mapping techniques.  Participants
will learn to watch, listen and note; 1) purpose, 2) topics, and 3) details
of discourse, in order to communicate speakers’ intended meanings.
