Program/Department: Rehabilitation Services

Reports to: Director of Rehabilitation Services and/or
Employment Services Manager

Supervises: None

Status: Exempt, full-time – Able to work independently, with minimal
supervision. Able to govern hours worked appropriate to the needs
of the program, program participants, department and agency. May
require adjusting hours to meet the demands of the agency or of
program participants. Hours worked above 40 hours per week will be
compensated with flex-time upon approval of the immediate supervisor
and Department Director.

Job Description

Job Title: Independent Living Specialist/Interpreter

Department: Independent Living Services

Reports To: ILS Director

FLSA Status: Salaried - Professional - Exempt

Job Summary Educate individuals and families in the community about
Independent Living Philosophy. Responsible for service coordination
assisting individuals to obtain independent living skills.

Job Description includes the following essential functions. Other duties
may be assigned.

Educates the MERIL service area about the various independent living
programs and the importance of utilizing these programs.

Distributes IL philosophy materials in the MERIL service area.

Participates in community activities which heighten the awareness of
disability rights and sensitivity issues.

Provides Outreach to the MERIL service area.

Assists consumers in developing IL plans. Makes referrals when
indicated.

Provides support to consumers to meet IL goals.

Assists consumers in identifying additional MERIL service area
resources.

Documents consumer progress toward goals and all contacts with
consumer.

Sees that consumers receive statements of consumer eligibility and are
informed of their responsibilities and rights as consumers.

Documents that all Consumer Service Records are complete in hard
copy and in database.

Will maintain complete confidentiality of persons, conversations,
materials, and data which they come in contact with.

Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory
responsibilities.

Qualifications Bachelor's degree (B. A. /B. S.) from four-year college or
university; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum of level 3 interpreter certification.

Other Skills and Abilities Knowledge of Medicaid service and
independent living services a plus but not  mandatory.  Prefer personal
experience with a disability.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Maintain CEU’s for required Missouri license.

Other Qualifications

Experience in the provision of Independent Living Services or
willingness to learn.

Personal qualities of initiative, adaptability, creativity, patience, and self-
direction.

Working knowledge of disability issues, concerns and methods of
service delivery.

Prefer personal experience with a disability with reasonable
accommodations provided for employee
