KCDHH no longer offers the KQAS Written Test

On Friday, January 11 the KCDHH Commission (formerly Board) took a
vote to replace the Kansas Quality Assurance Screening (KQAS) Written
Test with the National Interpreter Certification (NIC) Written Test (passed
unanimously).

What does this mean for you?

1) Effective August 1, 2008 you will not be able to take the KQAS
Written Test, you will need to take the NIC Written Test offered and
administered by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID).

2) This means if you are new to the interpreting field or a graduate of
the ITP (Class 2009) you will need to sign up with RID to take the NIC
Written Test.  Work out the logistics with your ITP
coordinator/faculty.

3) Information to take the NIC Written Test can be found on the
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) website at www.rid.org.

4) After taking and passing the NIC Written test you will have the
option of taking either the KQAS performance (within two years) or the
NIC performance test (within five years).

5) After you sign up to take the NIC Written Test you will be responsible
for following through all instructions per the RID
office/administrators.  Additionally you will be responsible for
communicating with the KCDHH office.

6) If you choose to take the KQAS performance test you will need to
show proof that you've passed the written test.

7) If you choose to take the NIC performance test you will need to
register and show proof of certification with KCDHH, that is applicable to
those who wish to work in the State of Kansas.

Additional Information:
This only impacts those who are new to the system (never been
certified); i.e., ITP graduates,  expired certification (lacking CEUs or
returning to the field after a leave of absence), etc.
